Amalu Shimamura
Bio: Amalu is from Okinawa, Japan, and is an Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. student in Professor Galan Moody’s Quantum Photonics Lab (QPL). She received her B.S. in Physics (2019) and a M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UC Santa Barbara. Before starting her graduate studies, she worked at Freedom Photonics on mask layout, device characterization, and failure analysis for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and lasers. Her research focuses on III-V semiconductor photonics and magneto-optic devices, specifically on developing sensitive, compact detectors using quantum light. This research has potential applications in geoscience, navigation, biomedical research, and space exploration.
