The UCSB Current article linked below visits UCSB Professor Chenhao Jin and Quantum Foundry Graduate fellow Richen Xiong, who are the lead authors of the recently published paper in Journal Science titled “Correlated insulator of excitons in WSe2/WS2 moiré superlattices”.

Richen, a second-year Ph.D. student, is also a Quantum Foundry Graduate fellow and member of the Chenhao’s research group at UCSB. Chenhao is a faculty member of Quantum Foundry Thrust 1 and 2, an expert in experimental condensed matter physics, and an assistant professor of the physics department.

'“We discovered a new state of matter — a bosonic correlated insulator,” said Richen Xiong, a graduate student researcher in the group of UCSB condensed matter physicist Chenhao Jin, and the lead author of a paper in the journal Science. According to Xiong, Jin and collaborators from UCSB, Arizona State University and the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan, this is the first time such a material has been created in a “real” (as opposed to synthetic) matter system. The unique material is a highly ordered crystal of bosonic particles called excitons."
